The Meerkat MRAP vehicle is an "Interim Vehicle-Mounted
Mine Detector". This single-occupant two-wheel drive vehicle leads
a team of other mine detection vehicles supporting route-clearance operations.
Looking like an oversized, armored dune buggy, the Meerkat uses both metal
detection and ground penetrating radar sensors mounted across the front,
to scan and detect landmines on dirt roads. The three ton Meerkat does not
set mines off while traversing over them; its large, wide tires exert little
ground pressure. If the vehicle does set off a mine or a roadside bomb,
it can survive the explosion, due to its blast-deflecting V-shaped hull
and an open-frame. There is little resistance to a blast; the shockwave
simply blows past the vehicle. The Meerkat marks the location of the mines,
and lets mine-clearing vehicles behind it take care of the explosive device.
