MetaVR's seamless 3D terrain of the continent of Europe is constructed with natural color imagery ranging from 0.60 to 15 meter-per-pixel (mpp) resolution and DTED 1 and 3-arcsecond void-filled Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data subsampled to achieve a nominal 50 meter post spacing.
Covering an area over 10,180,000 sq km (1,509 geocells), the terrain includes 0.60 mpp high-resolution natural color insets of many European capital cities and other cities of interest. Built with MetaVR’s Terrain Tools for Esri® ArcGIS®, the round-earth Metadesic-formatted terrain tiles reside in a geocentric coordinate system.
These terrain tiles are suitable for real-time visualization in MetaVR’s Virtual Reality Scene Generator (VRSG) in applications such as simulation, and synthetic vision such as glass-cockpit displays, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) applications, close-air-support (CAS) exercises, and fixed-wing cockpit simulation.
Included with the terrain of Portugal is a high-resolution geospecific replica of Monte Real Air Base in Monte Real, Portugal, built using 0.50 mpp resolution source imagery covering the entire country and SRTM1 (30m) elevation source data; also bathymetry data of Portuguese coastline and western Spain. The runway was constructed with new Runway tool in Terrain Tools version 1.5. Other 3D culture includes taxiways, tarmacs, runway lights, signage, antennas, instruments, grass/tree vegetation, and several geospecific models including the control tower and other air base buildings along the flight-line. The air base models were built from publicly available photos and then geolocated on the terrain in Scenario Editor. The surrounding culture models were generated in Esri® CityEngine® from OpenStreetMap building footprint data. Light points follow the road network and buildings contain emissive light-map textures for nighttime lighting.
Included with the terrain of Russia is a high-resolution, geospecific replica of the city of Kaliningrad, Russia, situated between Poland and Lithuania along the Baltic Coast. On this terrain inset, built with 0.60 mpp resolution imagery and DTED 2 elevation data, are cultural features totaling in over 17,000 realistic 3D building models, which were generated with Esri CityEngine.
Included with the terrain of the Ukraine is a high-resolution, geotypical urban MOUT site situated in the city area of Kharkiv. This detailed model of five unique city blocks is comprised of over 40 buildings in different configurations conducive to urban combat training. Detailed multi-level interiors of residential and office buildings, such as walls, hallways, stairwells, windows, doorways, and attics, enable trainees to reproduce natural firing positions within training exercises. The virtual MOUT model also makes extensive use of street elements such as fences, street lights, utility poles and cables, and street and park furniture.
The Europe 3D terrain is "Additional Materials" and is provided "as is" as described in our license agreement. Although MetaVR might modify or enhance the original source imagery, some visual artifacts from the source imagery might remain in the terrain tiles.

MetaVR's Europe 3D terrain is delivered on an external hard drive. The terrain is provided in MetaVR's round-earth Metadesic terrain format and will only run with a valid VRSG version 6 software license with valid software maintenance. A fee covers processing large quantities of data into Metadesic format and hard drive distribution media.
MetaVR's Europe 3D terrain is available for purchase to MetaVR customers who are US Government agencies or contractors (for official use only). Customers can duplicate the data at their discretion as long as the data is used in conjunction with a valid VRSG license.
